TRL is determined during a technology readiness assessment (TRA) that examines program concepts, technology requirements, and demonstrated technology capabilities. TRLs are based on a scale from 1 to 9 with 9 being the most mature technology.
- Basic Concept/Experimentation : Labscale experimentation with scientific observations made and reported. Example may include the detail experiment and methodologies adopted thereof.
- Basic concept and framing of technology : A validated labscale technology and its speculative applications.
- Proof of concept : Based on the obtained results, a confirmed framing of the research outcome in the form of technology. Example may include a validated analytical predictions with the framed measurements etc.
- Research to technology : Bridging the gap of scientific research to technology and its proper deployment.
- Process validation under relevant environment : Reliability of technology significantly increases. Examples could involve validation of a semi-integrated system/model of technological and supporting elements in a simulated environment.
- Prototype/ System verification : Validation of prototype and validation of relevant model developed under simulated environment.
- Integration of pilot system/Process demonstration : This is an advance stage of the maturity of any technology where the validation of technology is studied where the techno- economical feasibility is also considered for the said technology.
- Proof of Commercial design, deployment and Beyond : It quantifies technology ready for implementation.
- Ready for commercialization and deployment : It represents the most mature technology which is successful under operational environment and ready for commercialization.
